805,407. Filter paper for cigarette wads &c. MULLER, P. A. Aug. 1, 1956, No. 23765/56. Class 96. In the manufacture of filter paper, e.g. for making wads for cigarettes, the paper is ribbed &c. and, before being compacted, is perforated &c. so that frayed edges are formed. Pulp from a flow box 6, Fig. 1, flows on to a wire-cloth 1, is subjected to suction at 8 and 9, and couched on to a pick-up felt 11 which takes it to a drying drum 12; the web thus formed is perforated from one or both sides at 15, 16 so that projecting edges as illustrated in Fig. 5 are left; it is ribbed by rolls 17, 18, passed between helically grooved or knurled rolls 19, 20 and dried as by high-frequency electrical heating as it passes between electrodes 22, 23, &c. The rolls 17, 18 may be so formed as to produce paper of irregular thickness as illustrated in Fig. 11. Or the web may be stretched and compacted to the form illustrated in Fig. 18. Longitudinal strips of the web may be provided with different kinds of irregularities and perforations. In a modification, pulp is supplied and compressed between an upper and a lower wire-cloth, and compressed air is supplied opposite to a suction box.
