Axial spacing of a plurality of edge filter discs 38, 42, Fig. 1, stacked round a central post 14 and each comprising a central hub connected by spokes to an outer rim is effected by forming a portion or portions of the spokes with an increased effective thickness thereby providing filtering spaces between the rims of adjacent discs. The stack is capable of rotation with the post 14 whereby stationary scraper blades 30 mounted on a rod 26 and projecting between the discs serves to remove sediment therefrom. Alternate major and minor discs 38, 42 stacked round the post 14 have the inner edges of the rims of the major discs 38 in alignment with the outer edges of the rims of the minor disc 42 and the spokes of the larger discs are deformed to provide said axial spacing. Filtering apertures 82, Fig. 10, between outer edges 84 of minor discs 80 and aligned inner edges 86 of rims 66 of major discs 65 is effected by crimps 72, 74, Fig. 9, on true and false spokes of the major discs. The minor discs may also be crimped to provide larger filtering apertures. In a still further modification the stack comprises rimmed discs of equal diameter which are spaced by crimps running either transversely or longitudinally of the spokes.
