Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] A blade wheel, particularly for a torque converter, has blades 1 mounted on one or more casings 2, 3 by tenons 15 of rectangular crosssection on the blades passing into circular exscribing holes 14 in the casing. These holes may pass through the casing wall or they may be blind holes. The blades and casings are pressed out of sheet-metal, preferably steel. Locking tabs 8, 9 pass through slots 10, 11 in the casings 11, 12 and are then twisted or bent over. The locking tab and opening 8, 10 may be replaced by a further locating tenon 15, Fig. 3 (not shown). The assembled blade wheel is then furnace brazed using copper brazing metal, after which the protruding portion of the tongues may be machined off. The brazing closes any space between the tongues and their slots. In another embodiment for a pump impeller, Fig. 7, locating flanges 33 for the blades are formed by separate annular discs welded or soldered to the edges of casing; these discs are removed after the brazing operation. Alternatively locating flanges 32, Fig. 6 (not shown), may be formed integral with the casing. In another' embodiment, Fig. 8, the ends of the blades 25 have additional tenons 34 engaging in indents 35 of annular rings 36, 37 of angle cross-section, Fig. 11 attached to the casing 26. The rings may form part of a labyrinth packing when the blade wheel is assembled in the converter. Other similar embodiments are described for the pump impeller, Fig. 9 (not shown), and for the reaction blading, Figs. 15, 16 (not shown), of the converter.
