Abstract

802,506. Handling nuclear fuel elements. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 23,1956 [April 26, 1955], No. 12069/55. Class 39(4). A device for manipulating articles in a closed space, e.g., fuel rods in a nuclear reactor, comprises a head 11 secured above a hole in the upper wall of the chamber 10, a sleeve 15 which is rotatable within head 11, a member 17 which is guided by rollers 18 and ribs 16 for vertical movement in sleeve 15, a screw 21 and nut 20 for raising and lowering member 17, an arm 23, 24 which is articulated about an axis 27, is adapted to be moved to a vertical stowed position inside sleeve 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), and carries an article engaging member 30 at its free end, and separate drive shafts 33, 32 and 31, Fig. 5 (not shown) which, through gearing in the upper part of sleeve 15 effect movement of the arm, operation of the screw and rotation of the sleeve. Bevel wheel 56 is driven through another bevel wheel (not shown) on a telescopic shaft 48, 50, Fig. 1a, and when the arm is adjacent a vertical wall which prevents movement of part 24 about axis 27, rotation of wheel 56 effects lowering of the arm to the position shown, whilst when the arm has been swung away from the wall by rotation of sleeve 15 further rotation of wheel 56 effects slewing movement of the part 24.
