Abstract

Calcium sulphate is added to ammonium and/or alkali metal compounds and the resulting mixture is granulated, the amount of calcium sulphate present being between 10 per cent and 50 per cent by weight of the compositions. Calcium sulphate may be incorporated as anhydrite, the hemihydrate, the dihydrate or in the form of the waste gypsum that results from the attack of sulphuric acid on phosphate rock, although such gypsum is usually acid contaminated and would have to be neutralized e.g. with chalk, before use. It is desirable that all the solid materials employed should be ground to pass an 18 mesh British Standards sieve. Materials mentioned in the examples include: ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate sulphate, and potassium chloride.
