[Also in Group XI] A machine for preparing hot or cold beverages, e.g. coffee, comprises a siphon bottle or the like with means for admitting compressed gas to the bottle and a container for coffee powder or the like connected to the outlet of the bottle. As shown, pressure is created in a siphon bottle 1 by screwing a carbon dioxide or like cartridge 2 into it or by attaching a carbon dioxide bottle with a reducing valve. The siphon bottle has a removable head 3 with a hand lever 4 to operate the bottle valve and an outlet 5 to which is secured, by a cap nut 6, a scalding head 7. A bowl 8, in which coffee powder or the like may be placed, has a handle and one or more delivery tubes 9. In use the bottle 1 is filled with boiling water, or with cold water which is then heated, and the gas cartridge is inserted. On depressing lever 4 to open the bottle valve, the internal pressure forces the. hot water through the coffee in bowl 8 and thence through tubes 9 to cups 11. The bottle is supported on a stand 12 with a heating element 14 and is enclosed in a cylindrical cover 13 which may be insulated with a felt jacket. Alternatively, an electric flow heater may be placed between pipe 5 and cap nut 6. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the scalding head 7 may be secured to the cover 13.
