Abstract

782,858. Pontoon rafts. BRAITHWAITE & CO. ENGINEERS, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1956 [March 16, 1955], No. 7640/55. Class 113. A pontoon on which a caisson, pile or other under-water foundation member 7 is supported horizontally (following fabrication thereof in situ on the pontoon if desired) comprises a permanently floating portion 1 and a platform portion 2 which is adapted to be tilted in order to pitch said member endwise to place same vertically on the sea bed or the like above which the pontoon is floating. The portion 1 is constructed of a plurality of units and forms a horse-shoe shape in plan, i.e. has the form of a square with one side missing. The platform portion 2 is also formed from units, normally floats, is hinged to the permanently floating portion 1 at 3, and is continued as a cantilever 4 to cover the whole open interior area of the horse-shoe. The tilting of the platform portion 2 and the maintaining horizontal of the portion 1 are controlled by the filling and emptying of ballast chambers 6 and 5 respectively. Decking 9 and 10 may be provided over the two portions of the pontoon.
