Abstract
782,351. Valve gear; regulating. FELL, C. A. Jan. 7. 1954 [Oct. 9, 1952], No. 25370/52. Class 7(6) A carburetter-fed engine is controlled by adjustment of the inlet valve gear from a manual or foot-operated accelerator level 22 instead of by adjustment of the throttle valve. The pedal 22 is connected by a linkage system 20, 21 ,to a rod 19 connected to arms 18 of eccentric bushes 17 on which the inlet rockers 11 are mounted, adjustment of which bushes varies the valve lift and hence the power output. The rockers are actuated from cams 15, Fig. 2, through divided push rods 13, the upper and lower parts of which are urged apart by a spring 24 and are kept aligned by a sleeve 27 attached to the upper part by a collar 25 and sliding over a collar 26 on the lower part. Adjustment of the bushes 17 varies the clearance between the two parts of each push rod and hence varies the valve lift. In a modification the lift of the exhaust valves is varied simultaneously with that of the inlet valves. In a modified push rod. Fig. 4. the two parts of the rod 13 are aligned by a sleeve 33 and the opposing ends of the rod are provided with plugs 32 and are urged apart by a spring 36 acting on collars 34, 35 the sleeve 27 being in slidable contact with both parts of the rod 13. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the inlet valve lift was controlled by an adjustable wedge positioned between the tappet and valve stem and controlled by a governor. Specification 321,931 [Class 7 (vi)] is referred to.
