Abstract

778,093 Hydraulic brakes. TEVES, H. and TEVES, E. A., [trading as TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.- GES., A.]. June 10, 1955 [July 14, 1954], No. 16787/55. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulic pressure regulating device, particularly for use in regulating the distribution of braking force in vehicle brakes, having a stepped piston operated by pressure from a pressure-generating means (for example a master cylinder), a valve controls communication between the annular gap formed ahead of the larger diameter end of the piston and the reservoir and is operated by spring force due to the low pressure range and, when the pressure increases is closed by means of a piston or the like which is acted upon by the pressure in the high pressure space such that the pressure in the annular gap rises as the working pressure rises. In the embodiment illustrated, showing the rest position of the device, the hydraulic pressure regulating device 1 is situated between the master cylinder and the pipe leading to the rear wheel brake cylinders. As pressure from the pressure generating means (the master cylinder), via pipe 2, increases, the control piston 3 is displaced to the left and the pressure in the high-pressure space 11 rises. Since the pressure exerted by the pressure generating means is initially low, the annular gap 4 communicates with annular channel 5 via bore 12 and valve opening 13 and bore 14. When the pressure in the high-pressure space 11 reaches a given value, piston 15 is displaced and opening 13 closed by valve 9 so that the pressure relief of the annular gap 4 is prevented. A further increase of pressure allows pressure medium to pass from the annular gap 4 only when the pressure in the annular chamber 5 is greater than the pressure urging valve 9 on to its seat. The pressure in annular gap 4 rises until it reaches a value equal to the pressure in the space 11 and then no further transmission of pressure takes place. A spring loaded valve 10 is provided to relieve any excess pressure set up in annular gap 4. By suitably dimensioning the regulating device, equalisation of the front and rear wheel braking power is obtained at the commencement of braking. Upon the attainment of a predetermined pressure in the master cylinder, no further increase in pressure is transmitted by the regulating device whereupon the front wheel brake power becomes greater than the rear wheel brake power to take account of the dynamic axle load displacement.
