Abstract

777,099. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Telephone & Telegraph Corporation). Aug. 19, 1955, No. 24004/55. Class 40 (4). In an automatic exchange system, each substation on a party line is provided with an oscillator which generates a frequency identifying the substation to the exchange. The oscillator receives power from the exchange over the switch-hook contacts, and has its output connected across the dial contacts so that the identification signal is only transmitted to the exchange during dialling, and at a time when the telephone receiver is short circuited by the dial off-normal contacts. As shown, the pointcontact or junction transistor oscillates by virtue of the tuned transformer coupling 37 between collector and base when battery is applied from the line wires over the switch-hook contact 25 and dial off-normal contacts 30. The oscillator output is fed from winding 43 of the coupling transformer over the same path to line, but is short circuited by the dial contacts 29 except during the impulses themselves. At the exchange, the oscillation operates one of a plurality of tuned detectors connected across the line to bring up one of a corresponding set of relays indicating the identity of the calling subscriber.
