Abstract

772,158. Tapping casks and other vessels. GASKELL & CHAMBERS, Ltd. Oct. 27, 1955 [April 4, 1955], No. 9719/55. Class 21. [Also in Group XXVIII] A valve coupling for barrels and other containers comprises a body part 1, Fig. 1, attached to the container 2, and a closure member 3 held in contact with the inner face of the body 1 by screw means 4, the closure member 3 being rotatable until one or more openings in it are in alignment, as in Fig. 3, with one or more corresponding passages 6 in the body 1. A spigot 10, for coupling a, pipe 11 to the container 2, carries one or more key pieces 15 that are adapted to pass through enlarged ends 15 of arcuate slots 7 in the body 1 and into engagement with the closure member 3, the spigot 10 being centred on a neck 5 formed by the body 1. By turning the key pieces 15 about the neck 5, that is relatively to the body 1, the member 3 is caused to turn and at the same time the neck portions 16 in the key pieces 15 interact with the narrow portions of the slots 7 to prevent axial movement of the key pieces 15. The key pieces 15 depend from a hollow head 12 surrounding the spigot 10 and in the head 12 is a spring 13 which can exert axial pressure on a shoulder 14 of the spigot 10 to press the spigot 10 against sealing means 9. Other embodiments are also described in which two pipes 11 are capable of being coupled to the body 1, one pipe serving to convey liquid from the container 2 and the other to convey gas, such as carbon dioxide into the container. Fig. 4 shows an embodiment in which the spigot 10 is shaped to form a spout and a downwardly bent inlet pipe 17 is secured to the inner side of closure member 3. This construction is intended for attachment to the lower part of one end of a barrel to enable the whole of the contents of the barrel to be withdrawn.
