771,805. Photographic recording apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CHUBB, A. A., and ELLIOTT, D. S. Nov. 24, 1953 [Dec. 12, 1952], No. 31533/52. Class 98(1) For photographing a field of non-self luminous objects, e.g. telephone subscribers' meters together with a time-anddate strip, a box which carries a camera at one end and is open at the opposite end which defines the object field, is provided with two lamps or two groups of lamps arranged to illuminate the field in two separate parts which together constitute substantially the whole field and screens and plane mirrors located so that each part is illuminated directly and/or indirectly from only one light source or one group of light sources. As shown, lamps 4, 5 illuminate both directly and by reflection from mirrors 8, 9 respectively the two side-by-side halves of the object field 1 located in the plane of the open end of the box 2 and photographed by the camera 3, direct light from the lamps and specular reflections from the objects being cut off from the camera by screens 6, 7, 10, 11, the whole of the inside of the box being matt black. Typically the object field is square and is then illuminated by vertically separated pairs of lamps 4, 5. In a modification, Fig. 2, only two vertically separated lamps 22 are used, shields 29, 30 for each lamp and two sets of mirrors 23, 27 and 24, 28 being provided so that each lamp serves by reflection as four virtual light sources. The apparatus may be press-button controlled so as automatically to increase the light intensity for the duration of the exposure and to wind on a fresh film area in the camera.
