Abstract

768,547. Motor-cycle frames. INVACAR, Ltd,. and GREEVES, O. B. July 8, 1954 [July 8, 1953], No. 18985/53. Class 136(3). In a motor-cycle frame having an engine supporting cradle from which front and rear frame members 11, 12 extend upwardly and are connected together at their upper ends by a cross member 13 and to the rear of which cradle is connected a fork 14 carrying the rear wheel a fork carrying the front wheel being mounted at the upper end of the frame member 11 so as to swing about an upright axis, the member 11 is of angle section the cross sectional area of which increases along its length so as to provide the maximum resistance to bending at the locality where it is connected to the fork mounting for the front wheel and the cross member. As shown, the member 11 is of I-section having the web 15 in the plane of the frame and the two flanges 16, 17 spaced apart fore and aft, the width of the flanges and depth of the web increasing from the bottom to the top of the member. The mounting for the front fork comprises an upright or inclined tube 18 which is welded or brazed to the end of the cross member 13, the metal of the frame member 11 being cast from light alloy around the tube 18 and the end of the member 13. The cradle comprises a pair of U-shaped plates cast from light alloy and bolted as at 26 on either side of the member 11, the rear end of the plates being clamped against spacing members associated with the rear frame member 12. In a modification the cradle plates are cast integrally with the member 11.
