Abstract
767,518. Waveguide matching systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 8, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 3652/54. Class 40 (8). Two signals polarized in mutually perpendicular directions are propagated in a common waveguide 1 of square or circular cross-section, one signal Y being introduced by an aligned branch coupling 3 and the other signal X by a H-plane coupling 4. The directions of the electric fields of the two waves are indicated on the drawing. The signal X is fed to the guide 1 by means of a resonant slot 5. A further resonant slot 8 spaced a distance #g/4 from the slot 5 permits broad-band operation. The lateral branch 4 is matched to the guide 1 by means of two fins 6, 7, each of length equal to a multiple of #g/2, the positions of the fins being adjusted to control respectively the reactive and resistive components of the impedance presented by the guide 1. Examples of suitable dimensions are given in the Specification. Where the common waveguide 1 is of square section the coupling to the lateral branch may be in the E-plane instead of the H-plane. In the case of a circular section guide the fins 6, 7 are curved to lie orthogonally to the electric field.
