Abstract

746,769. Dies for pressing soap. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO., [formerly COLGATE-PALMOLIVE-PEET-CO.]. May 12, 1953 [May 15, 1952], No. 13288/53. Class 87(2) In pressing detergent material into bars a die member is used with a working face of plastic material. Two die members 26, Fig. 1, which reciprocate horizontally towards and away from each other, are of plastic material or faced with plastic material. The die boxes 11 which they enter may also be lined with plastic material. A block of plastic material with a depressed working face 32, Fig. 3, is screwed to a mounting plate 38 which in turn is secured to a member 42 of the press. The curved sides of the depression 32 form a thin edge 36 and when a soap blank is pressed between the dies in a die box, Fig. 5, it forces the edge 36 against the lever 48, Fig. 7, and prevents soap from collecting in the clearance space 46 (shown exaggerated). The plastic liner 48 for the die box has a ridge 60 round its perimeter which enters a groove in the cavity of the die box and the liner is thus held in position when the two halves of which the die box is composed are pressed together by tightening screws 56. Blanks of detergent are fed by a conveyer 21 into a guide box 14, Fig. 1, and are raised one at a time by a vertical pusher 22. A pusher 20 pushes the blank into a port in the guide box where it is held by a shoulder 18. A spider 10 carrying four equally spaced die boxes holds one, in its bottom position, opposite the port, and when the pusher 22 has brought another blank behind the first the pusher 20 pushes the first blank, by means of the second blank, through the port into the die cavity. The spider is then rotated through 90 degrees, by means not shown, and the die box, with the blank in it, is brought in line with the dies 26. The dies then move together and press the blank into a soap cake. When the dies are withdrawn the spider is again rotated through 90 degrees, carrying the pressed cake into the uppermost position. A pusher 28 then ejects the cake on to a delivery conveyer 30. A small quantity of lubricant is preferably applied to the blanks on the conveyer 21, e.g. mineral oil, carbitol, acetic acid, glycerine or salt solutions. The die sets may be made by any known moulding method, injection moulding being preferred. The plastic material is preferably a polymer of high molecular weight having a modulus of elasticity of 5X10<4> to 5X10<6> lb. per sq. in., a compressive strength of 4,500 to 35,000 lb. per sq,. in. and a flexural strength of 8,000 to 20,000 lb. per sq. in. and inert to the detergent material. Among suitable materials specified are condensation polyamides of adipic and sebacic acids, with hexamethylenediamine.
