Abstract
741,593. Hinges. GERK, W. Sept. 18, 1952 [Sept. 25, 1951], No. 22400/51. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group X] In a hinge comprising a forked leaf 9 having apertured part-cylindrical boss parts at the ends of the limbs thereof, and a leaf 10 having an apertured central part-cylindrical boss part to fit between the limbs of the fork and to be united therewith by a hinge pin 8, the central boss part is formed with a series of similar teeth 13 separated by grooves, and the forked leaf has a longitudinally immovable spring-controlled tongue 14 the plane of which, when the parts are at rest, intersects the central boss part in a line parallel to and closely adjacent the hinge axis, so that the end of the tongue projects into one of the grooves and, when one leaf is moved relatively to another, automatically moves against the action of the spring-controlling means to ride over a tooth and pass from one groove to another. As shown, the tongue is a leaf spring. In a modification, the tongue is a flat member pivoted at one end and held in position by a pair of leaf springs which engage the respective sides of the tongue. The hinge leaves may, alternatively, be formed integral with a window and its frame.
