Abstract
Polymers with a chain structure of carbon atoms having hydrogen atoms attached thereto and which change from a crystalline to a molten state on heating, e.g. polyethylene, are cross-linked by subjecting them to ionising radiation at a temperature sufficiently high for the crystalline state to be partially or wholly destroyed. In examples, polyethylene rod in an aluminium can is heated at 100 DEG to 150 DEG C. in a thermal nuclear reactor with a density of approximately 1012 neutrons per square centimetre per second for periods sufficient to give dosages of 3 and 8 X 1017 thermal neutrons per square centimetre. The product, which is pliable and elastic, has increased resistance to organic solvents and cold drawing. Specifications 732,047 and 739,709 are referred to.
