Abstract

729,784. Ball &c. mills. LIMB, F. Nov. 27, 1953 [Dec. 11, 1952], No. 31374/52. Class 59. The mill chamber of a ball or like mill has a closed spherical, or similarly continuously curved, surface arranged to be driven about one axis of rotation relatively to a chamber-carrying member which is itself arranged to be driven simultaneously about a second axis of rotation relatively to a fixed support, the two axes of rotation crossing obliquely within the chamber. In the form shown, the spherical mill chamber 10 is mounted to rotate about an axis C-D in a ring 3 which is itself mounted to rotate in a fixed frame 2 about an axis A-B. A gearwheel 8 fast on the lower trunnion 9 of the chamber 10 is geared directly or indirectly to a gear-wheel 7 fixed on the frame 2, and the ring 3 is rotated by means of a motor-driven belt passing round a pulley 14. The trunnion journals 9, 11 of the mill chamber are hollow and serve for charging and discharging purposes, the journals being closed by plugs 15, 16. Lifter bars may be provided in the mill chamber which may be jacketed for cooling. The mill chamber may be in the form of an oblate spheroid. According to the Provisional Specification, the axes of rotation of the mill chamber may be perpendicular to each other.
