Abstract
726,206. Gasifying liquid and other fuels. KOPPERS GES., H. Jan. 21, 1953 [Jan. 22, 1952], No. 1773/53. Class 55 (2). Liquid fuels such as hydrocarbon oils, oil residues and tar and solid fuels such as asphalt and solid paraffins which become liquid on heating are gasified with oxygen or oxygen enriched air by injecting them through a nozzle in the form of a thin film into a heated reaction chamber and directing the oxygen or oxygen enriched air in two streams one against each surface of the film and at such an angle that in front of the nozzle there is formed a homogeneous mixture of fuel and oxygen or oxygen enriched air. The streams of oxygen or oxygen enriched air are preferably directed so that their point of intersection lies within the film of liquid which may have a thickness of 0.5-1.0 mm. and be in the form of a cylindrical surface. In apparatus described the liquid fuel is supplied to an annular nozzle 3 through a pipe 4, the nozzle being divided up by a number of inserts which split the jet of liquid into a number of separate jets each of which carries out a helical movement on a cylindrical surface. Oxygen is supplied through concentric nozzles 6 and 7 and their streams intersect at a point not less than 3 mm. from the nozzles 3. Steam may be introduced through annular nozzle 10 and cooling water is circulated through pipes 12 and 13, 14 and 15, and 16 and 17. Both the oxygen and liquid fuel are preferably preheated.
