Abstract
In maintaining solid particles in suspension in a liquid capable of growing such particles, the process being particularly applicable to the production of alumina by the Bayer process, the particles formed are allowed to settle to the <PICT:0721995/III/1> bottom of a vessel 1 at a speed determined by their size, wherefrom they are caused to rise as a gasified suspension through pipe 4 arranged at an adjustable depth over a compressed air inlet valve 2, which suspension is distributed at the surface of the liquid by a blade wheel 7 carried by an open work support 6 at the top of pipe 4. The suspension passes through holes 11 into an annular chamber formed by ring 9, clear liquid being discharged over weir 14, heavier particles returning to vessel 1 through holes 10, and lighter particles with attached air bubbles being carried to the upper part of the liquid through holes 12. In normal operation, the level of the liquid in ring 9 is higher than that in the main vessel. When it is desired to withdraw the suspension, a ring 23, communicating with tubes 20, 24 connected by a rubber sleeve or hinge 21, is lowered over the blade wheel 7. Specification 653,741 is referred to.
