Abstract
To prevent deterioration of oil-bearing vegetable material, e.g. fresh coconut meat, rice bran, meats of pecan, walnut, cashew and peanuts, soy beans, during transport, and the development of rancidity in the oil content, the material is treated with a gas generated by the burning of a hydrocarbon-containing fuel gas with an amount of air insufficient for complete combustion, e.g. the gas of analysis 9.2 per cent carbon dioxide, 3.2 per cent carbon monoxide, 0.1 per cent acetylene, 0.1 per cent olefines, 0.6 per cent paraffins, 1.6 per cent hydrogen, 0.0 per cent oxygen, 1.0 per cent argon, 84.2 per cent nitrogen, and water vapour, obtained by burning natural gas, butane or popane with 70-85 per cent of the air theoretically required for complete combustion. Dehydration of the material may also be effected in an atmosphere of the gas. Specification 715,351 and U.S.A. Specification 2,490,951 are referred to.
