Abstract

708,907. Filtering gases. AMERICAN FELT CO. July 22, 1950, No. 18364/50. Class 8 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A self-sustaining fibrous unit suitable for filters comprises intermingled fusible and non-fusible fibres forming a relatively soft central area, and a surrounding marginal zone into which some of the central fibres extend and in which the fibres are bonded together by heat and pressure to form a relatively thin and stiff peripheral rim. A bat 10 of mixed cotton and cellulose acetate fibres is laid on a platen 11 of a press, and pressed by a heated upper platen 12 carrying a ring die 14 which has a circumferential cutting flange 15, to produce a circular filter unit with a thin, hard, resilient rim 16 of fused fibres. The centre dome-shaped portion may be uncompressed or slightly compressed according to the depth of the ring. A filter unit convex on both sides may be made by pressing the bat between two ring dies, or by sticking two units made as shown back-to-back. A separable sheet of paper or fabric may be placed between the die and the bat to avoid an abrupt break between the thin edge and the dome-shaped portion. Alternatively one or more layers of fabric or felt may be pressed with the bat on one or both sides, and caused to adhere to the rim by applying an adhesive or employing bonding fibres in the fabric. Two bats of mixed fibres may be pressed together with an interposed wire screen to form reinforced filter members. Instead of cotton, the non-fusible fibres may be of wool, rayon, ramie, or silk.
