Abstract

668,827. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 4, 1948, [June 5, 1947], No. 15149/48. Clas 39 (i). A travelling-wave tube comprises an input helix 8 for velocity modulating the electron beam, a drift tube 14 biased negatively with respect to helix 8 in which the velocity modulated beam becomes bunched, the negative bias serving to enhance the bunching, and an output helix 16. The input is fed to helix 8 via wave-guide 9 and antenna 10 and the output is taken from helix 16 via antenna 20 and wave-guide 19. Wave-guides 11, 17 coupled to the helices by antennµ 12, 18 provide matched terminations so as to prevent harmful reflections. The electron gun comprises indirectly heated cathode 2, concentrating electrode 3, and accelerating electrode 5; helices 8, 16 are maintained at high positive potentials by batteries 13, 21, drift tube 14 and collector 22 at smaller positive potentials. The helices are held inside the envelope by insulating supports (not shown). Magnetic coils or permanent magnets (not shown) focus the beam. The device is used as an amplifier or, if the two helices are suitably coupled, as an oscillator. The helix 16 may progressively diminish in pitch or increase in diameter from 18 to 20 to compensate for the decrease in velocity of the beam as it gives up energy to the helix. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the guides 11, 17 have matched terminations at their open ends. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
