661,522. Reciprocating pumps. EUREKA WILLIAMS CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1949. [March 31, 1949]. No. 23703/49. Class 102 (i). [Also in Group XI] An oil burner comprises an oil supply pump having a bye-pass between an inlet and an outlet thereof, a centrifugally responsive valve constructed and arranged to resist flow of oil through said bye-pass during operation of said pump. An oil metering pump having, its inlet connected to the outlet of the oil supply pump, and oil and air mixing nozzle connected to said metering pump through a normally closed valve adapted to be opened when the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of said oil supply pump attains a predetermined amount, and air supply means driven with said pumps for supplying a stream of air past said nozzle. Oil is suplied from a reservoir through an inlet 84, Fig. 2, and a filter 86 to a conduit 90 leading to the intake of a gear type oil supply pump 54 driven by a shaft 34 coupled to an electric motor, and which delivers fuel through a conduit 102, a chamber 104, a conduit 106, and chambers 108, 110 to the inlet 112 of a metering pump 56. The latter delivers fuel through an outlet 136 and a conduit 154 to a shut-off valve 60, Fig. 3, from the outlet conduit 200 of which fuel is supplied to a nozzle 22 to be discharged from a chamber 220 therein, through apertures 222, into an air stream delivered through a surrounding tube 76 and supplied through a conduit by a pump 52 regulated by a valve 78 controlling a bye-pass port 80. On starting up the burner and before the driving shaft 34 has attained full speed the chamber 108 through which passes the output of the supply pump 54 is connected through an inlet 184 in a rotor 160, a port 190, an annutar passage 192, and a passage 194 to an outlet 198 connected to the oil supply reservoir, or alternatively, if the outlet 198 is closed and a plug 196 removed, to the supply conduit to the pump 54. When the shaft 34 is running at full speed a ball valve member 188 is moved towards its seal by centrifugal force to reduce the oil flow through the opening 184, and to build up and maintain the pressure in the chamber 108 at a value proportional to the square of the speed of rotation of the shaft 34. The pressure in the chamber 108 is applied through passages 106 and 204 to one side of a spring pressed diaphragm 212 in the valve 60 to move the valve member 208 away from its seat 206 to allow passage of oil to the nozzle 22. The metering pump 56 comprises a rotary cylinder member 114, Fig. 11, provided with aligned bores 116, 118 each containing a slidable piston 120 having a cross pin 122, whereby springs 124 are confined for biasing the pistons 120 away from each other. The cylinder 114 is rotated by the shaft 34 within an eccentric ring 126 to reciprocate the pistons 120 so that each draws in liquid through the inlet 112 and discharges it through the outlet 136. The stroke of the pistons 120 may be adjusted by altering the eccentricity of the ring 126 by means of a cam surface 144 on a pin 146 the position of which is determined by a screw 150 and a spring 148. A ball 142 bears on the cam surface 144 and supports the ring 116 which is pressed downwardly by a leaf spring 138. The pressure developed by the metering pump 56 prior to the opening of the valve 60 may be relieved by movement of the cylinder 114 away from the wall in which the ports 112 and 136 are provided. A modified form of the valve 60 is described which is provided with means for passing a small amount of oil into the inlet of the air pump 52.
