Abstract

Lightweight cementitious products are reinforced with wood wool fibres which have a staple length of 1 1/2 to 2 inches. In examples sharp sand, Portland cement, wood wool of the required size, and water are mixed and then a hydrolysed protein foam slurry added and the resultant mix poured into moulds. The wood wool may be petrified by soaking the fibres in a sodium silicate solution and then allowing them to drain. Porosity may also be produced by adding gas producing agents, by whipping or whisking or by evaporation of water during curing. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of reinforcing fibres other than wood wool, e.g. glass wool, and such fibres may be of lengths other than 1 1\2 to 2 inches.
