Abstract
Polysiloxanes are prepared by a polymerization reaction in which an organo-silicon compound containing halogen bonded to silicon is reacted under non-hydrolysing conditions with an organosilicon compound containing an alkoxy or aryloxy group bonded to silicon. The corresponding alkyl or aryl halide is liberated and may be distilled off. In examples: (1) SiCl4 in toluene is treated with a mixture of ethyl and phenyl magnesium Grignard in ether/toluene, to give a chlorosilane, half of which is refluxed with methyl alcohol, the product being mixed with the other half and refluxed using ZnCl2 as catalyst; (2) as in (1), using methyl magnesium Grignard, and ethyl in place of methyl alcohol and FeCl3 in place of ZnCl2; (3) a chlorosilane made as in (1) is mixed with an ethoxysilane made by treating ethyl orthosilicate with a mixture of methyl and phenyl magnesium Grignard in ether/toluene, and refluxed in the presence of AlCl3. The products are oils which may be used in paints, in vacuum pumps or in brakes.ALSO:Polysiloxanes are prepared by a polymerization reaction in which an organosilicon compound containing halogen bonded to silicon is reacted under non-hydrolysing conditions with an organosilicon compound containing an alkoxy or aryloxy group bonded to silicon. The corresponding alkyl or aryl halide is liberated and may be distilled off.
