Abstract

651,468. Wells; water supplies. RANNEY METHOD WATER SUPPLIES, Inc. Sept. 22, 1947, No. 25736. Convention date, Aug. 7. [Classes 68 (i) and 85] [Also in Group I] To obtain water from a water bearing stratum a caisson 3 is sunk into the stratum and through one or more portholes above the plug forming the bottom of the caisson, a perforated screen pipe of pipes 5 is forced horizontally outwards. The space between the caisson and the screen pipe is sealed by a joint 40. Mounted concentrically within the screen pipe 14 is longitudinally adjustable imperforate pipe 8. The space between the pipes 14 and 8 within the porthole of the caisson is sealed off by a flexible sealing assembly 25 ... 29. During outward projection of the screen pipe, the pipe 8 is connected to a suction pump or the like so that water and fine silt can be removed from within the screen pipe, the amount depending upon the position of the pipe relative to the guide 20 and abutment 16 against which it is normally seated during the outward projection of the screen pipe. At the completion of the outward projection of the screen pipe, that portion of the pipe remaining within the caisson is cut off adjacent the flange 36 of the joint 40 and a valve 7 is secured to said flange. A clean-out valve 42 is then secured to said valve 7 and the pipe 8 and packer 25 ... 29 are withdrawn into a recess in the clean-out valve so that water flowing into said screen pipe can carry away any remaining silt in said tube. The valve 7 is shut down, the clean-out valve removed, and a blank secured to the flange 46 of the valve 7.
