Abstract

Marble slabs are made by mixing fibrous material with solid agglutinant to give partly coloured masses which, adequately wetted, are spread on at least one surface of a support and evenly covered with an aqueous binder, shaken, surplus water removed, pressed, hardened and then polished. Asbestos is the preferred fibrous material and cement or an adhesive the agglutinant, which may have sand added thereto, whilst cement grout, with or without sand, is the binder. The support may be a slab of cement and asbestos or a sheet of metal. Powdered chalk is used to remove the surplus water. The marble slabs may be reinforced and the support may have fixing means attached thereto. The desired thickness of slab is obtained by passing the mixed mass through a pair of spaced rollers or a mixing drum has a fixed size outlet. Veins characteristic of the marble are traced before the binder is added. Inert material, e.g. powdered cork may be included.
