Abstract
Salts are obtained by reacting, in the presence of an organic solvent for the end product, one or more straight-chain aliphatic primary amines with 8 to 18 carbon atoms with one or more of the following acids: benzoic, salicyclic, anthranilic and o-chlorbenzoic. Simple or multiple water-soluble salts are thus obtained, and in addition one or more water-soluble organic acids may be present in the reaction mixture, e.g. acetic or lactic. The proportions of amine and acid are so chosen that the product is substantially a neutral salt. Preferred amines are n-dodecylamine, 9-octadecebylamine, and "coconut" amine (mixture derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil). The organic solvent may be ethanol (95 per cent) or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and the solution of the salt obtained may be diluted to a 5 per cent solution in water. Examples are given of the preparation of simple and multiple salts.ALSO:Fungicidal and bactericidal compositions are obtained by diluting with water an organic solution of a salt of a straightchain primary aliphatic amine of 8-18 carbon atoms with a water-insoluble organic acid (benzoic, salicylic, anthranilic, ochlorbenzoic). The salt may be a simple one, or multiple derived from more than one amine and/or more than one acid; a water-soluble acid (e.g. acetic, lactic) may be used in addition to the acids specified above. The organic solvent may be ethanol or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Preferred amines are n-dodecylamine, 9-octadecenylamine and "coconut" amine (mixture derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil). Examples are given of simple and multiple salts, which may be used on affected materials and/or to prevent attack by micro-organisms. Specified applications are to render plants immune from attack, to prevent mildew growth on walls or floors and to prevent deterioration of starch pastes, sizes and glues.
