Abstract

643,828. Linear-dimension gauges. NEWALL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and TEMPLE, W. K. June 14, 1948, No. 15993. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In apparatus of the type described in Specification 448,517 in which a row of positioning elements, preferably rollers, representing units of measurement are urged together by means of a spring at one end of the row, inequal pressures and distortion of the elements are set up which interfere with the accuracy of the measurements made. In order to overcome this difficulty each roller 17 is provided with a reduced diameter portion 19 forming a stud at each end, around which springs 21 are engaged to urge each adjacent pair of rollers together with equal pressure between them. Additional springs 23 are engaged between each stud 19 and retaining wires 24, 25, placed beneath the base plate 11. A fixed anvil face 18 is provided at one end of the row to retain the rollers, and a similar anvil 27 is provided at the other end urged by a spring 28 which exerts approximately the same pressure as that between each adjacent pair of rollers.
