Abstract

638,892. Obstetric appliances. ALFORD, A. A. Oct. 30, 1947, No 28993. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1946. [Class 81(ii)] A surgical instrument for episiotomies comprises an elongated scalpel-and-suture guide 3, a shielding element 2, and means for drawing and releasing the sutures after insertion. With the instrument in position, sutures are inserted through the skin and passed between elements 2 and 3: the incision is then made along the line of the guide 3, which is troughshaped, and the instrument is then withdrawn, the suture loops being pulled by a hook 6 formed at the end of the guide 3, and the instrument is then removed. After the delivery the sutures are drawn tight and tied off in the normal manner.
