Abstract
631,638. Controlling motor vehicles. STIEGER, H. J. Oct. 14, 1947, No. 27553. Addition to 594,628. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v) ] In a delivery vehicle for goods as in the parent Specification in which the engine drives the driven wheel or wheels through a single centrifugal clutch and a control member operates the brakes when moved in one direction and the throttle and hence the clutch in the other direction, the drive includes at least two centrifugal clutches each giving a different gear ratio. The arrange-. ment is such that the first centrifugal clutch will engage on sufficient acceleration of the engine and on the attainment of a certain road speed further movement of the control member engages the second centrifugal clutch, the mechanism incorporating an over-running clutch or one-way driving device to compensate for the difference in speeds of certain parts of the drive during the engagement of the second clutch. As shown, the control member 13 is linked with a supplementary control member 16 by a torque tube 12 having an arm 31 connected to a push/pull cable 32 for varying the datum of an engine speed governor 30 by an arm 33 controlled by a spring 34. The arm 33, Fig. 6, can directly engage a link 37 to operate an engine throttle control member 35. Corresponding to the speed range of the second clutch the member 13 is resisted by a spring- loaded member 38. The brakes are operated by rods 8, 9 which are pivoted to arms 10, 11 freely mounted on the tube 12. The control members 13, 16 have protuberances at their lower ends to engage the arms 10, 11 and operate the brakes on anti-clockwise rotation as seen in Fig. 8. The brakes are also operated when the driver leaves a hinged platform 17. The free end of the platform is connected to a two-armed lever 21 pivoted on a vehicle chassis frame member 22, the other end of the lever being spring urged and connected by a cable 23 to an arm 24 on the torque tube. The engine 4 and rear axle assembly is carried by a removable rear frame comprising side members 40, 41 spaced apart by transverse members 42, 43. The members 40, 41 are each connected to one of the vehicle frame members 22, 22<SP>1</SP> by two bolts and rubber blocks 46, 47, the forward bolt 44 being horizontal .with its block 46 in shear and the rear bolt (not shown) vertical with its block 47 in compression. According to the provisional Specification the driver can stand on the removable rear platform or a seat can be provided. Specifications 594,630, 631,639, [Group XXIV], and 631,642 are referred to.
