[Class 146 (i)] In a binding device for loose sheets of paper or the like there is provided at least one magnetized element forming part of, or secured to, or detachably located within the spine or the covers of the binder or of the filing box or tray, the sheets having magnetic or magnetized material incorporated or secured thereon, the magnetized element or elements being arranged so that the magnetic or magnetized material in the sheets lies directly against the element or elements and is retained in contact therewith by magnetic attraction. Referring to Fig. 1, the spine of the binder has a strip of metal 12 secured at each end, the strip being shaped to provide undercut recesses for magnetized elements 14 of trapezium cross-section, the upper and lower faces of the elements being preferably of opposite polarity. Modified shapes of magnetized elements are shown, two of which may be secured to the spine by tapes. The covers 10 of the binder may have additional magnetized elements 21 to provide an attractive force to hold the covers together. In a modification, the magnetized elements along the spine have magnets arranged at each end, either flush with the covers or hinged to the elements, the magnets in closed position of the binder completing a magnetic circuit through metal parts on the edges of the loose sheets, Referring to Fig. 8, magnetized elements 30 are hinged together by wires or cords 31, the end elements being joined to covers 35, 36 by wires or cords 37, 38. The wires 31 may slide in slots in the elements to provide a flexible system which will allow the back to open out as shown. In any of the arrangements the magnetized elements may be formed from a sintered oxide magnetic-material or moulded from lightweight material such as finely divided particles of magnetized material bonded together in a thermoplastic synthetic resin. The magnets may be of any suitable shape, such as letters, and may be embedded in a plastic material to fit the spine and such letters may form a trade mark or the like. The sheets may have magnetic material clipped along one or more edges or secured as by glueing, the sheet being preferably of uniform thickness as shown in Fig. 8, or the sheets have magnetic material in powder form sprayed on or incorporated during manufacture.
