Abstract

An allyl silicate of the general formula <FORM:0630199/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or halide is used to promote adhesion between glass fibres and a thermosetting synthetic resin designed for use at pressures below 25 pounds per square inch by either coating the fibres with the silicate or incorporating the silicate in the resin prior to curing. The specified silicates are tetra-allyl silicate, tetra-methallyl silicate, beta-phenyl allyl silicate, beta-chlorallyl silicate. The resins may be styrene copolymers or allyl polymers or copolymers, e.g. diallyl phthalate. The silicate may be applied to the glass fibres as a solution in xylene.
