Abstract
<PICT:0630042/III/1> Metals, e.g. molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, nickel, tungsten, their hydroxides, oxides, carbonates, incompletely sulphided sulphides, salts of acidic oxygen compounds of the metals, e.g. tungstates, molybdates, thiotungstates, thiomolybdates, alloys thereof, or combinations of these materials with, say, natural or artificial siliceous gels, are sulphided in a fluidized bed to form, in particular, hydrogenation catalysts. As shown, the sulphidable material is aerated in hopper 10 by nitrogen or flue gas, and is then passed with hydrogen sulphide, or a mixture thereof with nitrogen &c., from compressor 19 to reactor 25 formed with heating means 31 maintaining a temperature of 300-700 DEG C. Pressures of 1 up to 1000 atms. are referred to. Sulphided material is discharged via pipe 35. The escaping gases pass through gas filters 29, which may be periodically cleared by gas blown back via line 30, or centrifugal or electrical separators, to vent 46, or to a condenser 47 to be recycled by blower 53. Nitrogen may be added through line 55. Condensation water may be removed from drum 49.
