Abstract

627,513. Electric resonators. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Oct. 10, 1946, No. 30271. Convention date, May 12, 1945. [Class 40 (viii)] A hollow cylindrical resonator has a tuning piston which leaves a gap between its outer edge and the chamber wall which permits oscillations of a TM1 mode to pass behind the piston into a part of the resonator with high resistance walls that attenuate these waves. The resonator comprises a chamber 11 of aluminium with an interior plating of silver. A plated disc 14 mounted on an adjusting stem 13 varies the mid-band frequency of the cavity which is cyclically varied by a plate 23 moved by an eccentric 20. A coupling loop 25 excites the resonator in a TE mode and an output loop 27 is also provided. A gap 29 between disc 23 and the chamber 11 does not affect the particular TE mode but tends to attenuate and change the frequency of undesired TM modes that are inevitably set up. In addition, the chamber 11 is not provided with a highly conductive plating behind the disc 23 so that there is marked energy dissipation by the TM modes which set up currents across the gap. Apertures in the form of slots or holes may be made in disc 23 in regions of weak field for the desired TE mode to aid further in suppressing the undesired modes. Similar construction may also be employed in connection with disc 14.
