625,948. Fuel injectors. RICARDO, H. R., and HOLT, G. A. March 7, 1947, Nos. 6452/47 and 5797/48. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] In a compression-ignition engine having intake ports B4, Fig. 3, arranged to cause rotation of the charge in the cylinder which persists on compression in the combustion chamber A<SP>1</SP>, the fuel is injected in two jets L, M, so that at starting the whole or major part is injected in the direction M in opposition to the rotation and at normal running the major part is injected in the direction L of the rotation. The nozzle F<SP>1</SP> may be of the type described in Specification 617,795. In a modification, Fig. 1, applied to a sleeve valve engine having an intake port B<SP>1</SP> and a cylindrical combustion chamber A, the injector F is arranged to produce a jet H in opposition to the rotation and a jet G parallel to the axis of rotation. In a further modification the two jets are provided by separate injectors fed from the same pump, and a valve may be provided to shut off the jet 'in opposition to the rotation after starting.
