Abstract
625,580. Adjusting brake mechanism. SOMVILLE, C. July 31, 1946, No. 22785. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1945. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 20, 1946.] [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In an automatic adjuster for sheathed cables, particularly for adjusting brakes, the effective length of a screw-and-nut device interposed in the length of the sheath is increased by excessive movement of the cable, acting through a cam slot device and a ratchet and pawl. As shown in Figs. 2, 6, ends 14 of the sheath abut respectively on the end part 27 of the adjuster and on a screw-threaded tubular rod 29 held against rotation and guided for axial movement by the engagement of a spur 32 thereon, with a slot in a cylindrical member 19. A nut 33 on the member 29 and which abuts on the end of member 19 has ratchet teeth engaged by a spring blade 34 fixed to a tubular member 21 rotatable on the member 19. The teeth are engaged also by a blade 35 fixed to member 19 to prevent reverse movement of the nut. A cylindrical member 15 slidable within the member 19 is fixed to the cable 13, which extends through the adjuster, by a screw 16 carrying a roller 18 arranged to travel in an axial slot 20 in the member 19. The roller 18 also travels in a slot 22 in the member 21, the first part of this slot being parallel to the cable and the latter part being helical. Thus, if in applying the brake, the movement of the cable in the sheath exceeds the length of the axial part of the slot 22 in the member 21, this member is turned and by turning the nut 33 moves the rod 29 and the abutting end of the sheath to the left to take up wear of the brake. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the device may operate during the return movement and it may be arranged at the end of the sheath of the cable instead of intermediate the length thereof. Further, according to Fig. 3 (Cancelled), a cable 5 is connected at 6 to a hand lever 1 pivotally mounted at 2 on a support 3 and the sheath 7 abuts on the head 8 of a screw-threaded tubular rod 9 slidable in the support 3. If the movement of the lever in applying the brake is excessive, a nib 11 on the lever engages ratchet teeth on a nut 10 on the rod 9, thus turning the nut and displacing the sheath to the left to take up wear of the brake. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
