[Class 138(ii)] An ironing board or stand 1 comprises an ironing surface for the work to be ironed and a support 7 for the temporary reception of the iron, the iron - supporting surface of the temporary support being disposed so as to form a smooth continuation of the said ironing surface at a small downward inclination thereto whereby the iron may be placed on the support by an uninterrupted downward extension of a sliding movement in the plane of the ironing surface. The support 7 is in the form of a sheet-metal tray having horizontal flanges 11 whereby it may be mounted in a recess near one end of the board 1. The entry end of the tray is disposed just below the ironing surface of the board and its base 8 slopes downwardly from this end towards the adjacent end of the board. The vertical side walls 9 of the tray converge towards each other in the direction of their deeper ends and are there joined by an end wall 10. A roller 13, which consists of a number of short sleeves mounted on a pin 15, extends across the entry end of the tray. A second roller 16 is mounted between lugs 17 bent up from the base 8 so that it lies parallel to the roller 13. A layer 22 of asbestos or other fireproof material is placed upon the base 8, and the upper edges of the rollers 13, 16 are disposed above the upper surface of this layer. An angle member 18 is secured to the inner face of each side wall 9 near the deeper end of the tray with one limb 19 thereof spaced above the base 8 and so shaped as to conform approximately to the rear end of the body of the iron and lie above the level of the projecting side edges 21 of the sole plate of an iron positioned in the tray. Outside the end wall 10, is mounted a box member 25 which is secured to the underside of the board 1 and the side walls 9 of the tray. Electric contacts 27, which are mounted inside the box 25, are connected by a lead with the electric supply and are adapted. when an iron of " cordless type is placed in the tray, to be engaged by the projecting contacts 23 on the iron; these contacts 23 project through holes 24 in the end wall 10. A detachable cover plate 30 in the board 1 provides access to the box 25, and a window 31 is fitted in this plate 30 to permit observation of a lamp 32 which is mounted in the box 25 in the heating circuit. If desired, the longitudinal centre line of the tray may be arranged at a small angle to the longitudinal centre line of the board, as shown in Fig. 2. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the tray is secured by wing nuts and bolts to the end of the board, bracket extensions 34, 35 being provided on the tray for this purpose. The ironing-board is mounted on a foldable support comprising a pair of hinged frames, one of which is hinged to the underside of the board, and the other, when in the open position, engages an abutment on the underside of the board.
