Abstract

Activated carbon is prepared by removing oil and tarry matter from the following carbonaceous material by a solvent, e.g. petrol, kerosene, benzene, ether, toluene, fusel oil or turpentine, removing the solvent and heating in an open or closed vessel to 100 DEG -700 DEG C. The carbonaceous material is lamp-, vegetable-, gas-, acetylene-, chimney- or carbon black, or the product obtained by burning various carbonaceous materials, e.g. oils, fats, turpentine, peat, tar, coal, timber, grass, starch, &c., in a restricted atmosphere and collecting the smoke. Prior to extraction with the solvent, the material should be neutralized by treatment with dilute acid or alkali, as the case may be.
