Abstract

A catalyst used in a gas desulphurization process (see Group XII) effects the conversion of organic sulphur compounds such as carbon disulphide, thiophene, &c., into hydrogen sulphide, in the presence of hydrogen. The catalyst consists of pelleted manganese oxide, preferably prepared from precipitated manganese compounds, but it may be prepared from crushed ores such as pyrolusite or psilomelane, the pellets preferably being reduced in hydrogen or a hydrogen containing gas prior to use. According to one example of preparing the catalyst, a basic manganese compound is precipitated from a soluble salt, the filtered, washed, dried precipitate being ignited for 4 hours at 400 DEG C., granulated, dried and then pelleted at 25 tons per sq. inch. The pellets are reduced in a hydrogen containing gas at a temperature not exceeding 550 DEG C. prior to use. Specifications 130,654, 305,026, [both in Class 55 (ii)], and 597,254, are referred to.
