Abstract

611,474. Earth continuity couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., and BLADES, R. W. May 1, 1946, No. 13216. [Class 38 (i)] A bonding and earthing device for braided screened cables consists of a metal ring through which the cable passes, carrying three clamps for securing the braid, a clamp for an earthed cable core, and a clamp for an earth bonding conductor. The ring is housed within a coupling box 25. Formed in the upper face of the ring 1 are three radially extending sockets 5 approximately equally disposed round the ring. Each socket has a slit in the top wall through which the bunched screening braid 14 of each core 4 is entered to be gripped by screws 7. A socket 10 extends from the inner wall to engage, if required, an earthed core 15. Below the ring, a fifth socket 8 secures, with screws or by sweating, a bonding wire 16 which is joined to a socket 23 on the gland 24 or alternatively to a terminal on the coupling box casing. This socket may be tangential, as shown, or normal to the ring. In further embodiments (not shown), the same ring is used with a cable having one outer collective screen for all cores, the strands of this screen being divided into three bunches and secured as above. Also disclosed is an earth core extended beyond the socket 10 and secured at its end to the coupling box, thus replacing the separate conductor 16.
