Abstract
<PICT:0607978/IV(b)/1> Vanillin is obtained by suspending or dissolving lignin-containing substances in an alkaline medium and subjecting the same to the action of a finely divided gas containing oxygen such as air such that the partial pressure of oxygen in the raction vessel is less than 20 pounds per square inch at a temperature in excess of 150 DEG C., the reaction time being less than four hours. In a preferred feature of the invention the treatment with the oxidizing gas is carried out in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst which is used consists either of the sludge residual in a reaction mixture in which vanillin has been produced by subjecting lignin-containing substances to the action of an oxygen containing gas in an alkaline medium to which has been added an auxiliary oxidizing agent, or of one of certain specific auxiliary oxidizing agents which have been used to obtain vanillin from lignin containing substances. Such oxidizing agents comprise inorganic oxides and salts which are easily reduced under alkaline conditions and include copper oxide, copper sulphate, cobalt oxide, cobalt nitrate, cerium oxide, lead oxide, manganese dioxide, and ferric chloride. The reaction is preferably carried out in an apparatus which comprises a bomb 1, fitted with an exit 3 in the cover 2 through which vapours pass to the condensing system 4 which terminates in a control relief valve 5 set to a predetermined pressure. An oxygen-containing gas is introduced through a porous plate 6. The bomb is also fitted with a pressure gauge 11 and a thermometer 13, and heated by gas flame 14. Examples are given of varying reaction conditions within the invention.
