Abstract
597,425. Luminescent coatings. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. (formerly PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd.), MOLL, J. A. M. V., and PYE, C. R. July 17, 1945, No. 18270. [Class 39 (i)] A luminescent coating is produced by employing as binder a mixture of nitrocellulose of medium or high viscosity and polyvinyl acetate in a solvent such as butyl acetate, amyl acetate or ethyl acetate with addition of a plasticiser, e.g. camphor or acetophenone. The luminescent powder is suspended in the binder by milling, coated on the article, e.g. a discharge tube, dried and baked at a temperature high enough to decompose the nitro-cellulose and the polyvinyl acetate. The baking step may be delayed several days. Ratio of polyvinyl acetate and nitro-cellulose lies between 4 and 1.7 to 1, preferably between 3.2 and 2.2 to 1.
