Abstract

A stable dry composition capable of setting to a hard mass on the addition of water comprises a solid inert material, a solid inorganic basic material and a solid inorganic acid salt, and may also comprise a water soluble fluoride, acid fluoride or silico-fluoride to control the setting time of the composition. Preferred proportions are 40-80 per cent. inert material, 10-25 per cent. basic material, 10-35 per cent. acid salt and 0-5 per cent. of the fluorine compound. The inert material may be silica, zircon, zircona, fused alumina, kyanite or other aluminosilicate materials, rutile, feldspar, granite, chromite or ilmenite. The inorganic acid salts may be acid phosphates, sulphates or arsenates of the alkali metals or ammonium, particularly the monobasic phosphates. The basic material may be dead-burned magnesite, dolomite or aluminates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, which should contain about 1-3 per cent. of iron oxide and silica. The normal acis or silico-fluorides of sodium and ammonium may be used. In use, 5-6 vols. of the previously mixed dry composition is added to 1 vol. of water, quickly and thoroughly stirred, and poured into a mould. Denser casts may be made by the addition of a few drops of a wetting agent such as a sulphonated oil plus a few drops of a defrothing agent such as octyl alcohol. Specification 578,177 is referred to.
