Abstract

Powdered iron with a silica content lower than that of the starting material is produced by treating at 600-800 DEG C. finely-divided silica-containing iron or iron oxide with a gaseous mixture comprising hydrogen and a proportion of hydrogen fluoride not greater than 10 per cent by volume of the mixture. The latter gas may be produced in situ by mixing with the iron or iron oxide a metallic fluoride capable of reacting with hydrogen and passing hydrogen over the mixture. The iron produced by the reduction of the oxide may be treated at 600-800 DEG C. with hydrogen substantially free from hydrogen fluoride and other impurities to complete the reduction of any residual oxide and to remove any fluorine which may have combined with the iron.
