Abstract

Sucrose is treated with oxalic acid hydrate yielding hydroxymethyl furfural and bis(furfural-2-methyl)-ether which are extracted from the solution. The residue is then treated with hydrobromic acid or hydrochloric acid (alone or in admixture with sodium bromide) producing formic acid and levulinic acid. In an example, sucrose solution is treated under pressure with oxalic acid hydrate. Humin is filtered off and the filtrate neutralized and stirred with basic lead acetate. The precipitate is filtered off and the filtrate extracted with ethyl acetate thus removing hydroxymethyl furfural and bis-(furfural-2-methyl)-ether. The aqueous layer from the extraction is evaporated to a syrup which is heated under pressure with hydrogen bromide. After extraction with ether, formic acid is distilled off leaving levulinic acid.
