Abstract

588,100. Apparatus for training pilots. LINK AVIATION DEVICES, Inc. May 23, 1944, No. 9942. Convention date, July 5, 1943. Addition to 569,249. [Class 4] A ground trainer of the type described in Specifications 370,128 and 481,375, and in which uneven setting of dummy throttle controls results in turning of the fuselage, as described in the parent Specification, is modified in such a way that the uneven setting of the throttle controls results in banking, as well as turning of the fuselage. The dummy control 'levers 54, 56, are connected by links 68, 69, to a cross-piece 70 of a rotary-disc valve 72, capable of vertical movement between guides 77. Unequal setting of the throttle levers causes pivotal movement of the member 70 and rotation of the associated valve disc to place one or other of the rudder bellows 176, 178, in communication with a suction source through a connection 148. The consequent rotation of the rudder bar 186 operates, through a link 190, the rudder valve 191 to actuate the turning motor and rotate the fuselage about its vertical axis. The pivotal movement of the cross-piece 70 also puts one or other of the aileron bellows, through a connection 177 or 179, into communication with the source of reduced pressure, resulting in simultaneous banking of the fuselage. Vertical movements of the valve 72 as the result of operation of either or both throttle levers is transmitted by a link 78 to mechanism producing appropriate variations in the readings of a dummy airspeed indicator-32, altimeter 94, and vertical speed indicator 96, respectively, as described in Specification 481,375. The pupil may counteract the turning and banking by operation of the rudder, or by banking the fuselage in the opposite direction, the latter operation resulting in a reduction of the rate of turn and in the rudder loading. In order to simulate the effect of positioning the rudder or a tab to counteract the turning caused by unequal engine speeds, the rudder pedals 192, 194, are connected to cables 272, 274, passing over a pulley 264 and incorporating tension springs 268, 270. Any desired loading may be applied'to the rudder bar by adjustment of the springs through hand gearing 254. The rudder valve 191 may be provided with auxiliary ports, as described in Specification 572,313, in order that the fuselage may automatically pitch nose down when it turns in either direction. Specification 573,953 also is referred to.
