Abstract
587,388. Helicopters. AUTOGIRO CO. OF AMERICA. July 26, 1944, No. 34507/46. Convention date, July 27, 1943. Divided out of 587,359. Drawings to Specification. [Class 4] A rotary-winged aircraft has a sustaining rotor in which the hub is controllably tiltable in one vertical plane only and control of the aircraft in the vertical plane perpendicular to the first-mentioned vertical plane is obtained by means of cyclic pitch control of the rotor, of variable amplitude and algebraic sign and of invariable phase such that the maximum and minimum pitch angle positions are in the first-mentioned vertical plane. In the construction described, the plane in which the hub is tiltable is the fore-and-aft plane of the craft and the construction for controllably tilting the hub is as described in Specification 587,359. The cyclic pitch control whichis exercised by means of the control stick C (also used for the hub control), (see drawings of Specification 587,359), acts through a torque tube Y to. operate a Bowden wire 47 for causing tilting of a,pivoted disc 41 carrying rods 40 jointed to arms 11 for turning the rotor blades to change their pitch. The rotor blades may be free to flap. Specifications 393,976 and 410,532 also are referred to.
