Abstract

<PICT:0585395/III/1> Powdered organic thermoplastic material, e.g., synthetic resin or cellulose acetate, is introduced into a hollow body, the body is rotated to spread the powder over its interior surface, and then heat is applied, whilst the body is still rotating, to fuse the powder and form a coherent layer on the said surface. The layer is allowed to cool. The body may be a metal tube, and may be spun fast enough to compact the resin &c. and accelerate the escape of bubbles therefrom. The resin layer may be circular or elliptical in cross-section, or otherwise shaped as by the use of insertions in the tube. The tube may be rotated about more than one axis. When polyvinyl chloride powder is used, a basic stabilizer should be present, to neutralize liberated hydrochloric acid. Polyamides oxidize at elevated temperatures, and may be fused in an inert atmosphere. Polystyrene may be used, and polythenes plasticized with polyisobutylene are particularly suitable. The resin may be reinforced by wire mesh or sheets of coarse-fibred material such as asbestos, glass or cellulose fabric by introducing these materials into the tube before the resin has solidified. In an example, asbestos paper is put into the tube before the resin powder is put in. A metal tube 1 may be lined with resin 5, loss of resin being prevented by rings 2 spaced from flanges 3 by rings 4.
